What Is A Gastroscopy
A gastroscopy uses a slim, flexible scope with a light and HD camera to examine the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum. While you rest under light sedation, the tube is gently guided through the mouth. Real-time images on a monitor reveal ulcers, inflammation or early growths, allowing your doctor to take tiny biopsies on the spot when needed.
Besides diagnosing diseases, the gastroscope can be fitted with instruments to:
- Seal bleeding vessels caused by ulcers or tumours
- Remove swallowed objects, such as a fish bone
- Cut out small growths such as polyps or early stomach cancers
Why Early Detection Matters
Stomach cancer ranks 7ᵗʰ in men and 9ᵗʰ in women for the most frequent cancer in Singapore, yet present few, if any, symptoms in its earliest stages.

Timely Intervention
Biopsies taken during the procedure clarify any abnormal findings, allowing care to begin without delay.

Prevent Serious Complications
Identifying ulcers or pre‑cancerous changes early helps to prevent sudden, serious bleeding events.

Minimally Invasive Options
Early-stage cancers can often be removed with keyhole surgery and require a shorter recovery period.

Better Treatment Outcomes
Early treatment reduces the chance of spread to nearby lymph nodes and the need for further therapy.
Complete A Gastroscopy In 4 Simple Steps
01
Step
Before Your Procedure
- Arrange a consultation with your doctor to discuss the procedure, its benefits and risks, and any alternatives methods.
- Give an informed consent once all your questions have been answered.
- You will be asked not to eat or drink for 4–6 hours before your scope.
02
Step
Preparation and Sedation
- Check in at the Endoscopy Centre, where a nurse will administer light sedation via an intravenous (IV) line.
- A medication spray will be administered to prevent gag reflex by numbing the back of your throat.
- Your blood pressure, pulse, and oxygen levels will be monitored throughout.
- You will be fitted with a soft mouth-guard to guard your teeth and the scope.
03
Step
During The Procedure
(10-15 Minutes)
- You will lie on your left side, as your doctor gently passes the scope through your mouth and into the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum.
- A small puff of air opens the lining for a clearer view. Besides feeling a brief fullness or the urge to burp, you should feel little to no discomfort.
- If needed, we will collect tiny biopsies, remove small growths or stop bleeding right away, sparing you a separate procedure.
04
Step
Recovery After Procedure
- Rest in our cosy recovery lounge for observation while the sedative wears off. Light refreshments will be served.
- Your doctor will discuss the findings with you, and a follow-up appointment will be arranged if needed.
- Avoid driving until the next day; arrange for a friend or family member to take you home.
